The Bakery Cafe/Restaurant Trend

Everyone in lockdown is talking about their mothers. No not the nurturing woman who raised them; their sourdough mother. The craze for bread didn’t happen overnight but it’s certainly escalated as we all fill our time indoors with baking. Outside of quarantine a host of restaurants combining baked goods with delectable small plates have been popping up over the last few years. Here we take a look at some of London’s most beloved bakeries and beyond...

Gail’s Bakery

The Gail’s group has transformed neighbourhoods with their spread of baked goods, showing how a bakery can create community. Gails’s has over 50 sites across the UK. They offer delivery, flavour packed lunches, freshly baked bread and more! Find your local Gail’s.

Jolene

Jolene is the third site from the gorgeous team behind Primeur, Westerns Laundry and Fitzroy. The site just off of Newington Green had been thought to be a bit cursed, seeing a high turnover of residents in the venue. But David Gingell and Jeremie Cometto-Lingenheim have transformed the space into a must go restaurant and bakery.

Oklava Bakery + Wine

The former site of Selin Kiazim and Laura Christie’s restaurant Kyseri, has been turned into a new bakery/restaurant/wine bar in Fitzrovia called, Oklava Bakery + Wine. The corner site boasts baked goods, a Saturday brunch menu and daily specials on the blackboard. We read Marina O’Laughlin’s review and have made a special note to get there quick!

The Dusty Knuckle

The team over at The Dusty Knuckle Bakery have created a bit of a cult following, supplying a large majority of restaurants in London with their bread, and serving up tasty sandwiches at their Dalston site. They even offer classes, so you too can become the mother of all bakers.
